Dear Future Melissa,

First off, hopefully you've gotten better at actually posting on Wednesdays, because that's something that we were slacking off on in 2012 and this first part of 2013.

2013 was a big year for you. College graduation, finding a job, and enrolling in graduate school, if said job gave you the money to get that started this year. How have you weathered these changes? Do you miss Lindenwood? Do you have friends at work? What's it like having money? Is grad school all you hoped it would be?

As of right now, we are full in the throes of plotting Gloves Off and switching between enjoyment and concern at all its challenges. Have you figured out the mysteries behind the town? What new citizens fill up Arch City? Is Max still your favorite? Have you gotten anyone to draw your characters for you?

Have you attempted to work on any other stories this year or has Gloves Off dominated again? Has the "little English majors" kid's cartoon been developed at all? Have you returned to any old friends like Corr or Honeywood? Do you have anything new you're working on or perhaps a collaboration with another writer or artist?

I hope you've put yourself out there and started sharing your characters with others, and have gotten into a habit of doing more writing for your blog. You should have plenty of inspiration, what with the fifth season of Venture Bros this year and new episodes of all your other favorite shows. As you read this, you should be only about six months away from the Phineas & Ferb movie!

I can't wait to see what we've learned this year, what our stories have grown into, what new projects we've started, and how we've grown as a person. Good luck being a full-blown adult!

Best Wishes,
Past Melissa

I'M SORRY THAT I HAVE BEEN A HUGE FLOP AT LJ LATELY. I've been busy with family/holiday things, spending a lot of time away from my computer, and also falling into the winter break trap of forgetting what day it is. Sorry for the lack of WW last week and not getting it posted in time last night :(

I've been working on a lengthy new character description for Magna-Man, but in the meantime, here's one of my final essays for creative non-fiction class, about Pokemon's influence on me as a writer.

I am almost certain I'm the only person to ever write an essay on this topicCollapse )

I just finished all of my classes for the semester!! I re-wrote two pieces for my Creative Non-Fiction class (the essay on Pokemon and an exercise on my obstacles in becoming an animation screenwriter), and wrote a bonus essay for honors credit. I didn't have a lot of time or energy left to do it so I picked a topic I love and knew I could write a lot about in a short amount of time: Phineas & Ferb.

That and I consider it my job to educate my 85-year-old professor on modern entertainmentCollapse )

The final project for my Folklore & Fables class is to write a modernized version of a Canterbury Tale. I reworked the clerk's tale about Griselda, the patient wife whose husband the king took away her children and divorced her and she still remained trusting and loyal, to be about a girl staying with a favorite television show despite all its character deaths and plot twists because she believed in the skill of the writers to tie it all together at the end, aka the story of me and Lost.

We're reading our stories aloud for the final class and I only have about five minutes (plus I'm scheduled to be the very last person) so I didn't want this to be too long, but do you think it needs more details? Is the story clear to you?

I don't really want to open up the Pandora's Box of planning a fake TV series right nowCollapse )

Sorry I skipped Writing Wednesday last week, but I was hosting my dear friend flossiepots for Thanksgiving break and showing her around St. Louis! We had an amazing time, and I'll be going into detail about that as soon as I get some homework out of the way.

This week's writing post is the historical essay that I turned in for creative non-fiction class last week. I had started writing a brief history of Cartoon Network, to celebrate its 20th anniversary the month before, but when I found out that the day before my assignment was due was the 84th anniversary of Steamboat Willie, I thought that would make a better topic. Plus I got to show off all my Walt Disney knowledge!

I couldn't fit into this piece, but he was raised in Missouri!Collapse )

I had to write a scene analysis for History of Film this week, and since it had come up in honors report on animation, I chose to write about the opening scene from Ed Edd n Eddy's Big Picture Show. It wasn't much of a challenge since I had already written a 2000 word essay on the film for fun, and I managed to get 765 words out of a 1:47 long scene.

And I hope my professor is impressed I could work a valid David Lynch reference into a paper on a Cartoon Network movieCollapse )

Sorry for another late entry, but I didn't have any new writing yesterday since last night I went to see Wreck-It Ralph (ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTFUL) and planned today to do all my homework.

My creative non-fiction professor wanted us to write nature essays, preferably in the style of Thoreau, where we have an insightful one-on-one encounter with nature. I have never had any such encounter, mostly due to my allergies keeping me indoors, so that's what I wrote about instead.

This is less of an essay and more of a long elaborate excuse as to why I can't write an essay.Collapse )

This week's Creative Non-Fiction assignment was to write an essay on family, and I wrote about spreading my grandparents' ashes this past spring. It's a lot funnier than it sounds. I read it aloud in class yesterday and everyone seemed to enjoy it, especially my professor, who had been encouraging us to experiment with humor styles. Oddly enough, two of the other stories we read were about dead grandparents as well.

My class may be evolving into a hive-mindCollapse )
